Accessing Shares Across W2K/XP

By andrew.drayton@techemail. ·
my network consists of 2 workstations with W2K and a laptop with windows XP Professional. the W2K systems can see each other fine, but the laptop doesnt see either of them. I have got internet access running to all systems (even the XP) but i havent been able to see other computers from the laptop. the laptop is running on the network via a wireless router if that will help (the W2K systems are wired 10/100).

Yuo may need to enable file sharing on the router to 'see' the other PCs.

When you have a wired network and a wireless network, you really have two networks. You have to do something to have them talk to each other. It's not difficult, but it's not automatic.

Connecting the two networks can be done by various means with names like bridge, router, and switch. For example, I have a small office network with a Linksys WRT54G broadband router. This single box provides an ethernet connection to the Internet (cable modem in my case), wired ethernet, and a wireless 802.11b/g network. This box is easily configured to route traffic between the wired and wireless networks. It also provides Internet connectivity to both networks and does other things as well (DNS, DHCP, etc.).

Please answer some questions:

1. What are the makes and models of your network hardware components? It sounds like you have some kind of broadband service (cable or DSL), a broadband router, and a WAP (wireless access point).

2. How are your network components connected?

Note: Since you're new to TR, be sure to rate the answers you receive and close your question when you're done.

I would first disable simple file sharing on the windows xp machine, then i would check to make sure your router/wap is not setup to isolate the wireless connection from your wired. Also default workgroup with win2k is workgroup, and most xp machine its called mshome i believe. Make sure your xp box is on the same workgroup.
