Account password problem

By mark@G3 ·
NT4 Domain with a 45 day password life-span.

Some users are prompted to change their password but when confirming their new password they get the error message that they don't have permission to change it. On checking their account in user manager the only option checked is "user must change password at next login" NOT "user cannot change password".

Any ideas what the problem is? Is it that they are trying to change password after 45 day period?

Can the user log in and change his/her password on any other computer? If yes, then look for a client setting or program that is disallowing this... ie. TweakUI and the autologon options, etc.

If no, then look at the server(s). Does your domain "trust" another? How is syncronization working between the domains?

On the servers:
1. Test conectivity. Be sure you can reach Server A from Server B and Server C with pings on a cmd shell. Try that with the IP addresses.
2. Test name resolution. Be sure you can on a command shell from Server B and Server C, issue a "Net view \\serverA". Verify how name resolution is resolved: LMHOSTs, WINS, DNS or whatever you are using.
3. Verify account synch. You will find messages regarding errors or problems with synchonization in Event Viewer.

On the client side:
1. Test conectivity. Ping server B with IP address from the client.
2. Test name resolution (Net view) for server B
3. Test domain resolution (Net view /domain:YourDomain).

Thanks but...
Already checked account sync, WINS, etc and there is only one domain with no trusts. Affected users are very widespread building wise and OS wise.
