Acer Ferrari 3200 boots sometimes

by h58pcguy . Updated 18 years, 2 months ago

Hello, this is my first post, I hope I do this correctly, but here it goes. I have built, repaired, upgraded both desktops and laptops for several years now and have a problem with an Acer Ferrari 3200 that I just cannot track down. The laptop when it boots runs excellent and will boot most of the time but occasionally it starts to boot, ie HDD spins, lights come on, Disc drive spins, etc. but never gets to the Ferrari splash screen. If I power it off, and believe it or not, kind of twist the bottom case, it will power up just fine and always restarts fine. If I then move the laptop or carry it to another spot, sometimes it will boot, sometimes it doesn’t. You can then ower it off if it does not boot all the way, and like I said twist it a little and it is fine again. I thought the problem was the IDE connector on the mainboard so I applied some heat to it with my soldering iron and all was fine for a day or two and then, back to the same thing. I have tested all transistors with a multimeter and all are fine. I am assuming there is some type of short on the mainboard, but before I go through the trouble of tracking it down, I thought I would ask for some input from everyone here. Thanks in advance for any help offered.
