Let’s start with installing the Active Direcotry, then then uninstalling it.

To install Active Directory, you need to have a DNS server, Windows 2000 Server/Ad server, and if this domain is going to be public, have the FQDN with internetsolutions.com (or other services). To install AD, Click Start, Run, and type “dcpromo”. This will launch a wizard to help you install it. Along the way, it will ask you for the domain name or FQDN and the DNS server address. Now, if u are going to use your ISP’s DNS server, then just type the ip address. However, if u want to create and manintain your own DNS server, then it will ask for that ip address. If it can’t find the DNS server, then it will ask you to install one along the way with AD. Your choices are AD intergrated DNS, or Standard Primary DNS, choose AD intergrated. There are other things you should be aware of too, to install AD, you have to format the Sysvol folder in the NTFS.

To uninstall, click start, run, and type “dcpromo”. It will launch the wizard again to demote the DC to member server or stand alone server. If u only have one existing DC with active directry, click on the option of “this is my last DC on the Domain”, and let the wizard take care of the rest.

For more info, you should look into the MCSE Training Kit “Active Directory Services”. I’m currently studying this portion, so my answer should be close to what Microsoft wants it done.

      Take care.
