Active Directory is must

Is it must to install Active Directory
Earlier ours is Windows NT 4.0 Server Service pack 4 installed. It is only File Server. Users are logging in domain and accessing data.

In Windows 2000 is it necessary to install Active Directory. Can we run only File server like Windows NT. IS it possible. AD is must on Windows 2000.

For Windows 2000, you do not necessarily need to install Active Directory.
Since Nt4 is no longer supported, I suggest migrating your NT4 domain to Active Directory. Its so much better than NT4 which proper LDAP structure, Group policies and so on and easier to manage.

Active Directory is Must for systems to be in a centralised Domain. If not installed all computers in a network will work as workstation only sharing files will be possible, but AD will provide centralised logon system with much much security
