Active Sync Error with USB connection

We have Verizon XV6700 phones running WM5. They sync over the air fine to our Exchange servers, but will not sync to Exchange when connected to the local PC's via USB. They sync anything set to local syncing without issues. When connected USB, an error of "The Server cannot be reached. This can be caused by temporary network conditions." Support code: 80072ee2.

Any suggestions?
