ActiveSAN from Active Storage: NO Solution to XServe

By maclovin ·
I was giddy with excitement that I might have an alternative to the XServe in a 1U chassis. Also excited because Apple even referred people to Active Storage for (what seemed like) an XServe alternative.

Here, I imagined a Webmin-based interface running AFP and Open directory.....I was way off. After all, without the server OS an XServe is just a 1U piece of hardware! This is just another item that ties into their current line of products, and is in NO WAY a real alternative to the XServe (which is what they made it seem).

The XServe's form factor in 1U was great, but a 1U case without a running server OS/services to take the place of the OS X Server if NOT a replacement, just another product in said company's existing line of stuff I don't currently need.

Maybe something else will be added later that helps! Maybe like Apple allowing the server OS to run on whatever hardware I want. (Yeah, I hear the voice in my head saying, "go back to Windows" too!

Looks like it's the ol' BOOT to corporate/business IT customers of Apple.
