AD Domain Name Change

By rempfer ·
I need to change the domain name of an AD domain which is not using Exchange. What utilities / or steps do I need to perform to make it happen? I am a self taught net admin with much experience but I do not know hw to do this other than removing each pc from the domain and then using dcpromo to remove the domain. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. All the pcs in the domain and the servers are 2000 Pro or Server.

Microsoft says that you cannot change the name of the domain in Windows 2000 unless it meets specific requirements and from what you stated i can tell that you don't. Sorry friend! You are stuck with demoting the DCs and starting over from scratch.

Here is article from Microsoft.

Good Luck!

If you are running in mixed mode then there is
an option.
Bring in an NT4 BDC.
remove all W2K domain controllers from the network. (force demote)
promote the BDC to PDC, then upgrade and create the W2K domain with the name you want.
You can then join the other W2K servers as replica DCS.
Also, the member servers and workstations must be removed and readded to the domain.

The only other way is to upgrade all DCs to W2K3
which supports domain rename.
