AD Domain Upgrade

By Hard_Yakka ·
I am upgrading my NT4 domain to 2K AD. Say I called the domain NSW.CMG could I later add a parent domain named CMG assuming the DNS was setup originally to reflect this?
What issues may I run into.

AD Domain Upgrade

Hi, I don't think you can.

Simply because when you're installing AD, if there are no other domain controllers, then the first one you install (in this case being NSW.CMG) would be the root in the forest.

If at a later time you wish to install a 'higher' DC, you'll have to first demote the NSW.CMG, install a DC for CMG, then install a 2nd DC, for NSW.CMG and make it a child in an existing tree, which would be the CMG domain.

Parent domains always come before child domains.

I hope that helps you in any way,

Let me ask you this, What comes first the Parent or the Child?

No you can not add Parents. You can start a new Domain tree in the same forest but the first domain you install will be the root of the forest.
