Adaptec Cd-writer software compatability

By Seadogs ·
I have a system that I upgraded to Windows 2000 from NT 4.0 sp5. This system has a cd-writer that uses Adaptec easy cdcreator. Unfortunately the software we have is only for 98/NT. I found an upgrade for the software to a version that is compatable with windows 2000 on my pc manufacturer's website. Here is the problem: I have to install the original software and reboot in order for the upgrade version to recognize that the software is installed. However upon rebooting, the system crashes and you can only get into recovery mode. I've tried just installing the software and then the upgrade, but the upgrade won't see the software in this case. Has anyone had any experiences like this? Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Do you run Virus Scan? That could possibly be causing the problem. I had Adaptec CD software installed and then installed Virus Scan and was having the same problem on reboot. I called Virus Scan and the fix is to add the Adaptec program directory to the exclusion list and make sure that it was excluded from the file and boot scanning. Hope this helps.

I did this once myself (before I knew about the update). In the recovery console you want to stop the cdr4.sys (or something similar to that). Change its startup mode to disable. You can now boot into Win2K, and update the software. I must say though I have not had the problem of updating the software on other installations of Win2K. You are running the floppy107.exe (Or whatever the lastest update is)? Again I have not had any problem running the update before rebooting.

I wrote an article with my experience with Easy CD Creator in Win2k. It might help you out.

Go toward the bottom of the page and look at the article "Learning to Adapt(ec)"
