Add disks to a Mega raid

By dennisbv ·
We have a windows 2000 server that has a Mega raid system with three disks set to raid five. I have ordered two disks that are the same size and speed but not the same manufacture. In the Raid set up it will show the original raid setup and it shows the two new disks. To add the new disks to the original raid do I edit the original to add the two new disks. How do I do this? I am a bit nervous as I cannot loose the data on the original disks. I will be doing a full back up.

There is never any guarentee when using drives from different manufacturers. It is perfectly reasonable to be nervous about this kind of procedure. Having a current backup available is recommended ANYTIME you plan a configuration change of this magnitude. So, you are doing the right thing there.

Having said that, most "modern" RAID controllers are much more forgiving in this area (drives from different manufacturers) than older controllers were.

In general it sounds like you have the right idea. You use the RAID configuration utility that came with your controller to modify your existing RAID array to add the new disks. You do NOT want to create a new array from scratch. Make sure you follow the documentation that came with your controller for the exact procedure.
