Add mirror greyed out ?

By carlos0463 ·
I recently installed windows server 2003 on an adaptec 29160 and there are currently 3 disks on the adapter. I converted all drives from basic to dynamic , including system and boot volumes. I am currently trying figure out why when right clicking on Disk 0, "add mirror" is not available and neither on Disk 1. The whole purpose of getting these 2 same size disks were to test out mirroring and now I dont even that option. Furthermore, if I right click on my 3rd drive which has two volumes , I do have the option to mirror. I don't get it, I just want my system drive to mirror in case something happens to it. Any help would be great;y appreciated, Sincerely, Carlos

First make sure the System disc is Dynamic and preferably in NTFS format. Also, make sure all of disk 2 is unallocated and no disk letter set. Also check that the 2nd disk is equal (or larger) than disk 1. I have come across cases that disks were just a few meg smaller which prevented them from being used in RAID sets.

are you describing a RAID controller? because sounds like you are attempting to use windows RAID to mirror the disk containing the os. i bet you ran into a classic windows gotcha. you can't use windows to mirror the system/boot disk. think you gotta use hardware raid for that...don't know my adaptec part numbers well enough to know if you already have the controller you need. you may be able to use windows to mirror it to a remote computer. yuck. think that is not what you want. think you want to mirror primary disk with hardware RAID controller using your two identical disks. ps am wise-guy but: should be three if you expect to have one on hand to repair quick which is idea of mirroring yes? otherwise few years from now you get stuck w/o right type of drive. mount spare in server unconnected labeled 'spare' model number size

It's possible that the SCSI Ultra 160 29160 Adapter doesn't like Dynamic Disks. It's also possible that it doesn't like Windows Server 2003 [not on the compatible list]

Have you asked Adpatec whats up?

If you look at the Adaptec Site you will find that this card isn't supported by 2003

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/techspecs.jsp?sess=no&language=English+US&prodkey=ASC-29160&cat=%2fProduct%2fASC-29160&fromarea=prod

But having said that your problem is most likely the Dynamic Disks as this is the major difference between 2003 and previous versions of Windows. It is the way that these disc's are address by 2003 that is most likely causing your problem if you convert them back to just normal disks it might work the way that you want it to but you will be reducing your storage space by 50%.

I would like to thank all of you for answers and support. To Clarify a few things :
In windows 2003 server, the boot and system volumes can be mirrored. The adaptec 29160 is not "supported" under windows 2003 , but like many drivers the XP driver will work just fine and actually it has native support from the OS. The way the drives had been formatted seemed to have been the issue. I went ahead and ran FDISK and completely repartitioned them with the exact amounts of both disks. Once I was in Disk Management I went ahead and right clicked and there it was the option to "Add Mirror". Thanks for all your help and I hope this helps other users.
