After installing W98SE and rebooting, the Add New Hardware Wizard is trying to add a "unknown device". Part way into this it finds a device called "RC144AxF" and wants the software for it. I do not know what device it has found or even what software/device driver it might be looking for. The only non-motherboard hardware that is in this older NECP120 computer is a "Boca Research 28.8 Modem" and its model number is not this one.
First question is "Did SE find and install the Modem?" The letters RC are familiar but I cannot place them, but 144 appears to be a 14.4 modem. This may be a driver for the modem. I suggest to remove the modem only under the device manager and let SE reinstall it. If it has been installed once windows should find it. Also, while in the Device Manager, look and see if you have any devices with an exclaimation mark. this may lead you to the device that Se is looking for. Most NEC's came with a lot of harware slobbered on the mainboard. As it is a 120, you may have to dig through the manuals on the unit. It may have a build in modem and you may need to disable it.
Hi Paul, HELP! The add new hardware wizard was still looking for a unknown device even after i removed it in device mgr and shut down the PC and removed the Boca Research 28.8 modem(ISA) and rebooted. The device wanted to use IRQ 5&9. I have since formatted the HDD and re-installed windows98SE and the add new hard ware wizard is still looking for a "unknown device", even though the Boca Research 28.8 modem was removed. The person shown below also responded to my initial question and stated that the drivers, listed below, might be needed? "From: eduardo@electrikdesigns.com You can also download the drivers in a ZIP file directly from http://www.drdriver.com/files/acer/rc144axf.zip"
I have looked in the BIOS and do not see any place to disable any onboard modem that might be on the motherboard? Also there are no RJ11 connections coming off of the motherboard. What will the above drivers do, since i only want to use the ISA Boca 28.8 modem?
If i install the above device driversthat Eduardo has mentioned, willi be able to disable it and then install and add the device drivers for the Boca 28.8 ISA modem?
Just my two cents worth. The machine sounds like its a Packard Bell. they use IRQ 5 and 9 for the sound winmodem. If you using the sound card that came with the system, most likely thats the cause. If so remove it and get a cheap $15 one like Creative or Opti. Should clear up the problem. I used to have a PB Legend and it did this the first time I installed 98. Take Care
Hi I ran into a problem similar the puter I was working on had a modem riser. I did install the diver for the divice and then disabled it. then installed another modem which was not a win modem. THe computer recognized the new modem and was up and running with no problems. Hope this helps. rockyolson@charter,net
