Add-on Serial Port for Notebook

By msimone69 ·
I have a Compaq Presario 715 notebook running Win XP Home. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a 9-pin serial port, which I have discovered a need for. Is there a USB-to-serial connector that Windows will see and apply a COM port to?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

i'm afraid that compaq do not have that as an option for purchase.
maybe you'll like to give them a ring to check it out?
cos, normally 3 party are not supported.
there are scenarios which there are usb to paralled cables but they are only meantfor printer function and does not supports parallel devices...
so why not give them a call to confirm?

There are several solutions, here are important differences :

1. USB connected addon serial port - very easy to use and not expensive (about 25 USD) but...it will not work with devices such as ChipCard readers(often used in Homebanking applications), Nokia telephones(for contacts synchronizations) due to specific Virtual serial port specification.

2. Serial port based on PCMCIA type II card - much more expensive (about 100 USD)but it should work as fully functional serial port

I have same problem with my old Toshiba 2800-200 notebook.

Thanks for the info. It looks like I'll have to go with the PCMCIA card version unfortunately. Thanks again
