Add Printer using Active Directory

By dlucas ·
I am the Network Administrator of a High School and running windows 2000 Domain. I have many printers setup through out the school. I would like to set up so that computer that are around the printers go to that printer using OU's I have looked atthe Group Policy and I seem to not be able to find anything within the group policy. Here is an example of what I want to do.

I have and OU set up called 'Room 6' (Room 6 is something like a mini lab here at the school it has about 8 Win2K Pro machines) I want to be able to control what printer those 8 Win2K machines print to. I can get it done by writing a script but it is limited to only the user and the users are not in that OU. If I tell the script to run at startup (adding it the computer configuration) it reports an error to me saying it can't find the file contained in the script. It would make my life so much easier here if I can control what OU prints to a printer.

I hope I made this clear and would like suggestions on this matter. Thank You.

Add Printer using Active Directory

Hi,

I'm not sure that what you want to do is the easiest way around it. In windows 2000 you can add computers to groups. Create a group for each room that you have and only give that group rights to the printers in each room. I work in a trainingcompany (training Windows 2000 MCSE courses) and this is the easiest way I have come up with. As you add new machines to an OU just add them to the relevant groups.

I should have said that after creating the groups add the computers objects for each machine to the relevant groups.
