Add Ram now Computer will not boot Up! Help Please!?

By jinnl337 ·
Hi, I recently built my computer and wanted to add more rams to it but I'm having some trouble.

Motherboard: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO
RAM: CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

I have 4 ram slots on my motherboard. I originally had 2gbs in slot 1 and 3 each. I bought 2more 2gb ram (same brand everything!) and added it in slot 2 and 4 and then my computer does not boot!

So I tried to do the single ram test and try each slot. The computer only boots and makes a beeping noise in slots 1 and 3. Slot 2 and 4 does not boot.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a setting I have to change? Please help! Thanks!

First things first

You need to grab the M'Board manual and look at the RAM that this M'Board needs. When you populate 2 Slots you can use slow RAM but when you want to Populate all 4 Slots you need to use the Fastest RAM that the M'Board can handle.

If you look at the manual you need to use Corsair DDR3 1800 MHZ RAM when you populate all 4 Memory Slots or better yet DDR3 1866 MHZ RAM. If you try to use anything slower the M'Board will not work with that RAM.

If you try the current RAM in Slots 1 & 3 you should find that both sets will work but if you try to populate all 4 Slots the System will not boot. This is because the RAM is too slow for the M'Board and you need to fit faster RAM here.

But somehow it smacks of Truth.

I think that I first noticed this

With the P31 Chip Set. But it's been that way for a while now.

Seems that you can fit Cheap RAM when you want to run 2 Sockets and you have to replace it all with the expensive stuff when you want to populate all 4 Sockets.

Check boot order in setup

My lousy box won't boot any time I make a hardware change, until I go back into setup and remind it again it needs to boot from the hard disk. Otherwise, it keeps looking at the CD drive and the USB ports.

I could be wrong but,,,, I think it's supposed to work that way.....

I think with the four slots on that MOBO, you can run four sticks of single-channel RAM or two sticks of dual-channel RAM, but not four sticks of dual-channel RAM.

If there is a way to force dual-channel RAM to run in single-channel mode, then that would be the fix, in your case.

Freakier still

and then... " but only supports one module in any slot for single channel operation."
So, why on earth is there four slots?
If you can use either A1B1 or A2B2, or just one of these four... what's the whole point?
This is one of those things...

Like the fact that you park on a driveway and drive on a parkway.
