Recently (possibly right after the latest big batch of uprades to WinXP) the Add/remove programs display has become corrupt.
When viewing the items in alphabetical order (default) I see entries up to the letter "D". After that, I see lines that are completely black for several screens as I scroll down. Eventually, the lines just have two black areas, giving the impression of two black columns on the display.
If I change the sort order, I see entries further down in the alphabet, but still not the full complement of entries.

This information helped me understand a little better where the information is stored, but not correct the problem.
Actually, the original problem description lacked one aspect that I hadn't noticed originally. After all of the many garbage screens, the rest of the lists were eventually displayed.
A freeware application has no problem showing them without the extra screens of black columns.
I have the same problem. I don't know what to do. I see black lines on add/remove programs. When viewing the items in alphabetical order (default) I see entries up to the letter "D". When viewing items in frequently used items I see black lines in the top of the list. I bought a dsl connection after then all the problems start in my computer. I chose to answer that question because ? can not find how to participate to a guestion in the web site.
I used "ashampoo winOptimizer suit version 1.326" start up tuner module. When you click software you will see the corrupted file entry which you can delete. You can download this program from www.ashampoo.com and you can also receive a free trial key from the same address.
Had the same problem. As suggested before used Ashampoo WinOptimizer Platinum Suite 2 to view the list of installed software (StartUp Tuner>Edit List of Installed Software). Didn't show as corrupt, but I worked out using the alphabetical list which program was causing the problem, and uninstalled it (normally, not using WinOptimzer).
