Add / Remove programs problem with WIndo

By lrotolo ·
I am experiencing a problem with the Windows 2000 add / remove programs applet. When I select America Online and click the remove button I get the following error message: "An I/O error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file. Abort / Retry." Retry doesn't work, and Abort displays the following error: "The uninstallation file is damaged."
After reinstalling AOL, (both versions 5 & 6), I tried AOL support. Two different techs could not help. I checked Microsoft's support site but couldn't find anything. I'm fairly certain that there is something wrong with an AOL registry key. AOL support did not have a listing of the keys the software modifies, (or at least would not release the list to me). Short of deleting all references to AOL in the registry and reinstalling the two packages, I am open to suggestions.

Why are you installing AOL on a Windows 2000 machine? nevermind.

anyway. try installing AOL on another machine, and using a program to track the changes in the registry? Also, copy the uninstallation file from the other PC to the one your working on.

last but not least. open the uninstall file, and if it is ASCII (text) delete the files, and registry keys referenced in it.

good luck.. AOL?? sorry..

I installed AOL 5, briefly, on Win2k Server (at the time 6.0 wasn't out for Win2k) But I found it laced with bugs which affected IE5.5, and other apps. After (a successful) uninstall, things have returned to normal.

I wouldn't recommend AOL on Win2k.
