Add Win 2000 user to Win XP Admin Grp

By NLambron ·
I have a Windows 2000 server. Purchased a new PC with Windows XP.

I added the PC to the domain and can logon as any user of the domain.

I need to add a user to the local Administrators Group on the XP machine. I logged on as the domain administrator and attempted to add the user, but get an error that the domain cannot be found. I have connectivity because I can browse shared folders.

I'm doing this the same way as on the Windows 2000 PCs.

I also notice slow logons. There's only 7 PCs on the switch with the server. All Windows 2000 Pro PCs are okay.

I have removed the PC from the domain and re-added it. I've also tried adding the user to the Power User Group with no luck.

Do you have your internal DNS AD server as the DNS on the XP machine?

You should set up DNS on your server as active directory uses it.

Once DNS is set up you run adpromo to install active directory - it sounds like you have already done this. (then make the zones active directory integrated from the DNS manager.
Finally right click on the DNS server in the DNS manager and choose properties. Enable forwarders and type in the DNS addresses of your ISPs DNS servers.

Now, if you configure all clients and the server to use the server as their DNS servers then the whole network will function more efficiently.

Mail me if you have any problems.

Uh-oh. Sounds like I may have DNS setup wrong altogether.
My XP machine has the DNS settings that our DSL provider gave us. I believe that the server also has those settings. Do I add the server's IP address to the server and the XP box?
