Add win xp hdd to Win 7 machine?

By wdunmars ·
I have a new Gateway DX43000-15e with sata hdd & Win7 installed. I have a ide hdd with Win xp from my old Gateway 700XL. Can I dual boot or will it just show as a second drive?

So I'm incapable of checking the spec of a PC that doesn't exist.

Anyhow, you have little or no chance of booting from this old XP HDD since any installed hard drive can only realistically be booted from within the PC that it was installed in.

When XP installs, it builds a 'picture' of the components as it discovers each during the install. This is called the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) and is individual to the computer where the install takes place.

Sometimes it is feasible to remove all the HAL components, then boot into Safe Mode within the new system and rebuild the HAL by having already sourced all the required components - BUT in this case you are wanting to DUAL BOOT and performing this method would NOT tell Windows 7 that Windows XP exists elsewhere within the new computer. Not to mention the fact that you are probably contravening the OEM Licence Agreement for the install of XP from the old computer.

Depending on which flavour of Windows 7 you have - you could always try running Virtual PC and mounting Windows XP MODE as a virtual machine within Windows 7.

So that more or less rules out any possibility of booting from it, period.
