Added drive but not showing up

By chrisj ·
Hello everyone,

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2600 with a Dell PERC 4/Di RAID Controller. This unit holds a total of 6 drives but only 3 drives (RAID configured)are installed. The OS is Windows 2003 Server.

I installed a 4th (SCSI) drive but it will not show up. My goal is not to add to the RAID but use it as a seperate drive for online storage.

Any suggestions on how to make this drive appear?

Many thanks in advance.

See it there?

Perhaps it's just not partitioned and formatted.

Do not see in Disk Management Console

by chrisj In reply to Disk Management Console

Hello sir,

I do not see it in Disk Management Console. Even did a disk rescan and still no drive. Correct...the drive has not been partitioned or formatted. I assumed I would see the device then be able to format.

Thank you for responding

You'll need to go into the RAID controller software.

Open the controller interface and see if you can find it there. It's possible that the controller has already assigned the new drive as a hot spare, or it sees the drive but has not initialized it yet.

Hopefully you have the windoes software installed. If not you'll have to do thsi from the BIOS end of the controller software.

Best of luck.

Couple of things

Is the SCSI chain terminated after the drive?
Does the startup SCSI Controller utility display the drive?

What Address did you assign the New Drive?

Sounds as if you have the same address as something else in that SCSI Chain.
