Adding a 2003 server to a 2000 domain ?

By NatCat ·
Hi All ;-)

Licensing issues aside, can I add a 2003 server and a dc on a 2000 domain ?
What are the technical implications ?

You will need to make sure the Windows 2000 Domain Controllers have at least service pack 2 on them to address some well known issues with AD, but this shouldn't be a massive issue to get them patched to the latest Service Packs.

You will need to run forest prep and domain prep and run any associated Exchange preps before you add the first Windows 2003 domain controller.

You won't be able to raise the domain and forest functional levels until all the DC's are converted to Windows 2003.

If you run the preps, you should have have an issue with adding a Windows 2003 DC to a Windows 2000 domain.

Tons of details available on Dan "The MCSE Man" Petri's site:
