Adding a 5.1 server to a 4.10 tree

By tejackson ·
I am planning to install a Netware 5.1 Server into an existing tree that currently contains 6 servers running Netware 4.10. I understand that there are some nlms that must be loaded on the 4.10 servers, but thats about it. Does anyone know of any TID's or other documentation that will instruct me on how to accomplish this project. Has anyone gone done this road before and can share any issues that I should be concerened with. Your help/advice will be greatly appreciated

Adding a 5.1 server to a 4.10 tree

Not sure about TID's etc but your main issue will be NDS versions. Ensure that you patch the 4.10 server to the latest version of NDS (not sure what it is for 4.10) and when you install the 5.1 server do not use NDS 8 - stick with Ver 7.xx

Your best approach would be to upgrade the 4.10 server to 4.11 and run at least NDS Ver 6.10 on the 4.11 and 7.47 on the 5.1 server. This works in large environments..

Good luck :-)

Adding a 5.1 server to a 4.10 tree

This project turned into a nightmare. After 4 days of troubleshooting with Novell (at the premium support level!!!) with no resolution. We decided to upgrade our network entirely. Mixing NetWare 4.10 and 5.1 servers in the same environment is NOT RECCOMENDED and NOT SUPPORTED by Novell (support for 4.10 ended as of May 1,2000). Consequently, we had to twist their (Novell) arm just to get them to talk to us. I was able to install the NetWare 5.1 server in the tree, however, I was not able to get the licence envelope to install on the new server. There were pre-existing issues with NDS on the 4.10 servers (obits that would not process). Our plans are to upgrade our hardware and install NetWare 5.1 on the new servers. With the tree beginning life as a 5.1 tree we hope to avoid any unforeseen issues that are inherent with a mixed environment.

Upgrade at least one server to 4.11 or add a single license version of 4.11 to your tree. Ensure they are all patched to the latest version of DS and make sure the tree is healthy. When the tree is healthy, make the 4.11 server the Master Replica. Coexistense for the long term between 4.1 and 5.1 NDS was not real successful. The 4.11 server saved our bacon, as we had to kill all the replicas on the 4.1 servers and pass the good replica on the 4.11 server to the rest.
NDS is pretty resilient, but budget a $300 incident for Novell NDS specialist help and have pcAnywhere available for them. If you get in a real bind, the $300 will be small change for them to fix it for you.

support.novell.com has some good references for it.
