Adding a new hard drive

By ideafixer ·
I have NT 4.0 server installed on a Compaq Proliant. I added a hard drive to the server and thought disk administrator would recognize the drive. It did not. I rebooted and still the drive is not there. I am assuming this may be due to the fact the drive is not formatted.

I have a raid three in the system as one logical drive with two partitions. There is another drive that is independent and the fifth drive I just added. I want this drive to be independent as well. I do not want to expand the raid.

I am not sure were to start my approach. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Adding a new hard drive

Does the drive show up when your server runs POST and the other SCSI devices are listed? I'm assuming this is a SCSI drive by the way. What controller are you installing it in? Did you set the SCSI ID properly and all that?

First check to make sure that the drive is properly detected by the controller it is connected to - either SCSI or IDE. If it's SCSI and the controller doesn't see it, check the termination, SCSI ID, etc. If it's IDE and the controller doesn't seeit, then the drive mechanics themselves or the controller itself are not working. If everything is OK hardware-wise, then you have to look at the drivers for the controller. Does the controller itself appear in the NT Control Panel/SCSI Adapters device list? If not, you will have to install the appropriate NT drivers for the controller before NT will recognize the drive. Hope this helps!

Because it's a compaq server you will have to define the drive first in the Compaq Array Configuration Utility!! (e.g. boot with the Compaq SmartStart CDROM or if you have the utility installed from the Start-Programs - Compaq ...) There you can add the drive on hardware-level. After this is done, you can start Disk administrator to create a partition.

good luck.

You should add this drive as RAID-0. Than you can have a single drive on the RAID controller configuration.
