Adding a second computer to cable modem

By janicecrompton ·
My daughter just got a new desktop - she has a coax cable into her room (for television) and we have a cable modem setup in our office for our main computer. Do I need to pay Comcast to install another cable modem in her room, can she hook to my existing modem, or can I use a wireless cable modem (I have an extra one)? thanks for your help

All you need is a broadband router, either wired or wireless

You don't need to pay for a second modem or circuit contrary to the bullcrap that most cable companies tell their customers. The challenge would be to get the connectivity to the other PC if it uses a wired ethernet connection, or if you prefer to go wireless, you can get a WiFi router and install a wireless network adapter in the other desktop. But please, if you choose to buy a wireless router to share your connection, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read the instruction manual and change the default admin password as well as setup security as high as you can, preferrably WPA2-PSK. There are whole discussions here about open Wifi access points and how the end user, being you, can be held legally liable if someone uses your unsecure connection to download child porn or illegal MP3 files because you are the owner of the connection. Don't be the typical ignorant user that simply plugs the device in out of the box and adds a 10th SSID in the neighborhood called "Linksys" or "Dlink". By all means, read the manual, change the SSID, and lock it down with the highest level of security as possible. If you require assistance, ask us and we'll be happy to help you get it working. Do not rely on the cable company because they won't setup security or change the default admin password, which is well known and documented for every consumer brand of router out there.

In addition to my day job I consult part time for a small business in my area. The provide technical solutions for small and home businesses as well as residential customers. We insist that all wireless access points be secured by while we are onsite whether we installed it or not. Providing free practically untraceable internet access to criminals is not a good thing.

But to the original poster: You have received solid advice that I am sure everyone one here would concur with.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
