Adding an Exchange Server to Novell

By gyalch ·
WE currently have a novell network running across three offices and were looking to add a Small Business Server to add exchange for e-mail. Right now we have a seperate win2000 server hosting our web on a DMZ. We will need internet e-mail access and I was wondering about location of the exchange server and then what I have to do to allow the clients to access it. Should I locate the server on the DMZ or on the LAN. Also, as far as login, what is entailed to allow novell clients to access the server. Thanks a bunch for the help.

Adding an Exchange Server to Novell

1) Location of mail server: with Exchange you can do both. Because it doubles as the internal mail server, I'd recommend placing it in the LAN and opening up the DMZ to pass through the needed SMTP traffic in both ways.
2) Supposing you have NW 4 or higher, you need Novell Account Management with the ADS extension. This will replicate eDirectory accounts to ADS accounts which are essential to run Exchange2000.

Hope this helps,

Not really an answer, just a suggestion that may be too late: Before buying Exchange, take a look at Novell's Netmail. SMTP, POP, IMAP, Webmail, iCal support, Palm support, AntiSpam, Anti-virus all built in (ok, the antivirus needs McAfee or inoculate installed on the server).

And it runs on Netware! Which means you can manage it with NWAdmin. And yes, it works with OutLook.

It's a very low overhead system -- I have clients running it on their production servers with no impact.

Unless you need the up-to-the-minute calendar sharing of Exchange, NetMail is a viable choice.
