Check the new memory and insure it is compatible to the memory that you have installed in system, you will want to use compaq specified memory modules with the system, they donot work well with other memory types.
You can try changing the memory banks, inserting the new memory first and then the old memory module
No,there is little risk in flashing the bios, follow the instructions and all will be well

try to use the lastest BIOS update for your system. This should expand it's RAM capabilities. Also, you wanna make sure you are seating the memory stick firmly in the socket. Sometimes failure to seat the memory completely will result in failure to boot properly, or the system will not see the additional memory at all. Compaq systems have a tendency to be a bit "picky" when dealing with upgrading. They tend to only want Compaq components.

Ran into same type of problem with a 4716 (EDO only), would only work with 2 of 4 sticks in the first slot. Found out later at work that compaq has an affinity for lower speed memory, with very tight specks on what it will accept (70+/- 2 ns access)73/67 ns would not work on that particular PC! 4 sticks and reboots later the normal IT people found memory that would work with that PC. It was the pickest PC I have seen.

Tried reversing or only booting with the new ram? May be an ram/bus speed problem.
