Adding space to drives (RAID5)

By camy2079 ·
I recently added another scsi drive to my RAID 5 array. I used the expansion tool through adaptec which allows me to add the additional drive while preventing me from losing all data. After I rebooted, I now see the additional space as unallocatedin the array. I currenly have a C and D drive evenly split (18GB each) I'd like to take the unallocated space and add to both current drives.

Can this be done in W2k? Do I need something like volume maanger to do this? Are there any other methods? It's not in the budget to purchase volume manager.

Thanks

not too sure about this. my 2 cents is, go into help and look up 'expanding a volume'. it is kinda tricky. you do it thru Disk Administrator. it has to be a dynamic volume. the boot disk can't be a dynamic volume tho. hope this helps...

If you go into computer management you can right click on a current volume and choose expand to add the additional free space. You may need to convert the disks to dynamic first.

Make sure you have a valid backup before doing this.

remember that a RAID-5 array has parity striped over your existing disc`s, what you should do is backup all your data, delete all volumes and rescan disc`s to add you additional disc to your your raid array and restore from your backup.

hope this helps!

Adding space to drives (RAID5)

I'm think my question was a little vague...

I want to add to (expand my C and D drive) existing drives. I do not want to backup, lose all data and restore/install. From what I read, I don't want to convert to dynamic. How can I distribute my new disk? Can volume manager do this?

Thanks
