adding w2k computer to w2k domain

By e.de.vries ·
Hi, i can't add a computer to a w2k domain. When i click properties and fill in the domain in my computer\properties\network identification i get the following message:
the network location cannot be reached.

I have tried al sorts of combinations like user, domain\user , user.domain etcetera (and ofcourse password) when the computer asks for an account with permission to join the domain, but nothing helped.

What am i doing wrong?
The networkproperties are setup fine. (static TCP/IP, NT4WINS...)

If everything else is truely fine, Then you can try adding the machine manually to the Domain using the MMC snap-in on your Server then try adding the computer.

Not a user account. A machine account.

When i tried to establish a connection for a known user in the domain with the Network ID button, i couldn't. It first said:
windows cannot find an account for your computer on the domain. Then i got the chance to add the computer as mentioned above. By using the domain administrator's rights. I got the message:
The network path was not found.
A sniffer told me that there was connection between the client and the domain controller. netlogon: SAM LOGON requested and later Query for Primary DC, but the domain admin wasn't accepted.

Win2k domains use DNS for primary name resolution. Make sure that the ip address for DNS is correct on the client machine that you are trying to add. Hope this helps.

By looking at the frames (which are send between the computers) i can tell that the domain server doesn't have problems finding the client.

Hi,
first you need to add a client to an existing network administrator rights. But it seems that this is not your problem. It looks more that your networkcard isn't running. Try winipcfg and look on your networkcard. If its MAC-Adress is FF-FF-FF-FF then it is damaged and you need an exchange.
When it is not damaged, then check the cable.

Hope this was helping you

When i add a client windows2000 wants me to add the computer to the domain and asks for an domain admin for authentication. After this i get the pop-up: network path was not found.
The networkcard is running fine (i can enter some computers which require no authorization). I need the ipconfig /all command though.

I found out that in the netlogon frames transmitted between the client and the domain controller (in the netbios datagram protocol):
the client was looking for
destination NETBIOS name = "domain"<1C> <Domain Controller>
while another client whichalready can log on was just looking for:
destination NETBIOS name = "name of server"<00> <Workstation/Redirector>
