AddingWin2k Server

By jtatum65 ·
My company took on another corporation in our network and they bought a win2k server to run their applications from instead of sharing our server. Problem is we run WinNT 4 server, so my question is....is there a way to join the 2 servers in a trusted enviroment as to share certain files and applications.

Thanks,
Jim Tatum

You will have to set up a one way trust. Windows NT 4.0 does not support transitive trusts.

Check out the following site.

So, this new Win2K server is brand new. Is it set up to be a Domain Controller? Is it running Active Directory? Did someone run DCPROMO on it?
If not, then just add it to your NT domain. Win2K Servers can be members of NT4 domains as member servers. Just don't try to upgrade it to be a domain controller!
But you can add it to your existing NT domain. Then, sharing files is a lot easier.

hope this helps

Win2k servers can be members of NT4 domains. So long as the Win2k box isn't a domain controller, and you aren't intending on using it to host Active Directory, you don't even need to make any changes to your environment (other than joining the new server to the domain).

Conversely, NT4 boxes can happily exist in a Win2k Active Directory Forest (or a .NET one for that matter).
