    additional domain controller

    Locked

    by lost_n_cyberspace ·

i am adding a additional domain controller to the domain: haydensd.re1 . error.. the domain haydensd.re1 is not an active directory domain, or an active directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted… if i take off the suffix the wizard continues, and allows me to search. the browse button finds the correct domain but will not allow to continue. if i remove the suffix again a dialog box says: the domain name “haydensd” refers to the domain “haydensd.re1. is that what you intended? but then i get operation failed because: failed finding a suitable domain controller for the domain. “the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.” any ideas?????????? thanks in advance

sounds like there might be a DNS issue. Make sure to define the existing AD DNS server before running dcpromo. Try running dcdiag /test:dcpromo on the machine you are trying to promote.

      is this Windows 2003 server?

What is the actual domain name? With Windows 2003 Server the default domain name has a .local extension.

Windows 2000 server allows you to use a public extension such as .com .org.

I agree with lowland, in TCPIP properties you need to specify an existing AD DNS server (if creating a new DNS server as well, make sure its lower down the DNS server list to start off with)
first so it can contact the first AD DC.

this is a win2k svr. i ran netdiag (dcdiag had dll errors) returned passed except for dc list test, haydensd: no DCs are up, but passed Dc discovery test. passed dns with the warning: cannot find a primary authoritative DNs server for the name hydhpsvr.haydensd.re1. [recode_server_failure] the name ‘hydhpsvr.haydensd.re1’ may not be registered in DNS. the dc is running DNS and hayden.re1 is in the forward lookup. any ideas how to proceed?? thanks in advance

log on the to existing DC or if you have a seperate DNS server log on to the DNS server and look at the A records for the domain. If you don’t have an A record for your domain, create on.

sorry to be lame… the dns has a forward look up of the domain haydensd.re1, and a “A” record of (same as parent folder) is this where i create an alias record, it does not let me create a record of the fqdn. thanks in advance.
