adduser with PERIOD (.)

Why could i not add a user with a period ex.( before i could add this at rh8. Why is this removed in rh9. Could there be a way to enable this.

make sure the user you add with a period is female. it might work. ;-)

I do not know why it was removed in RH 9.0 but it also doesn't work in Mandrake 9.1 so if you really want to do this this is how.

1. Edit /etc/passwd to add the name. Use an existing one as a template. Remember to change the user ID to the next higher one.

2. Edit /etc/shadow if your using shadow passwords and set the password to nothing.

3. Create the home directory and assign rights to the user.

4. run passwd [username] and set the initial passwd.

It's a pain but I tried it and it works.
