When I currentoy open explore the default folder that opens is C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu. Is there a way of changiing this default to another folder? I’d like it to default to C:\My documents. I was told that this could not be done.

I believe that you can do this by modifying the properties of the windows explorer target. Use this line: C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,C:\MYDOCU~1
above is the dos nameC:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,C:\My Documents
or above, the 32 bit foldername.

There may also be a default setting within the registry. Let me know if this works. If it does, inform the naysayers as well.

On explorer, click on Tools, folder options, and click on restore defaults. The default folder should be My documents.

      Good Luck!

Just a small correction. The correct syntax is:

      C:\windows\explorer.exe /n /e c:\my documents

      (no commas)

/n opens explorer in a new window (if explorer is already open) and /e opens it in the familiar two-pane view.

Calves’ answer wasn’t there when I posted. I’ve no doubt he’s right in what he’s saying (look at the top scorers!), but using the syntax you can ANY folder to be opened when explorer starts.

Alright, now I’m intrigued (and unless you accept one of my answers I’m going to get hit with THREE rejects-thanks Tech Republic! ).

You say start menu is your default. I think that only happens when you right-click on the Start button and click explore. Using the syntax method, you can modify Explorer on the Start Menu or create your own desktop shortcut. But I don’t think either of the choices you’ve been given here will affect starting explorer from the Start button.

If that’s chnageable at all, it’s got to be deep in the registry.
