Admin password changed-can't get in

By TomtechJo ·
It may be a virus! but I can't log in as admin on my own W2K server. There was a recent article published on how to resolve this, something to the effect of deleting the SAM? Can someone tell me how to find the article or how to resolve my problem.

In your specific case, this might not work... but depending on how mission critical your server is, well, it might be worth it.

Visit http://www.atstake.com/research/lc/index.html
where you will find LC4. This is a tool designed to audit Windows passwords. It is capable of forcing the passwords out of the registry - and doing so over a network from a remote computer. I commonly use it to audit my network's password security and make recomendations on changing passwords. It is easy to use, and doesn't take much time.

Two stipulations - the first one being that you might have to purchase it to use the brute force from a remote PC, and the 2nd is that it generally would require local logon privleges. This might make it pointless to even try to use.

Do you have another Administrator-level account that you can log in with? If so, then log in with that account, then open up AD Users & Computers snap-in, and change the password for the Administrator account.
Then try and log in as the Administrator.

If not, then you can try this option:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/index.html

hope this helps

there is a program called 'locksmith' that will let you reset the admin password. pretty sure you can download a trial from winternals.com. to use it, you connect to the machine via serial ports (i take my laptop to the machine). the directions are not too complicated. Good luck!

Here is a few options to reset the admin password on Win2K.
If your boot partition is fat:
Boot from a dos floppy (or CDROM). At the command prompt type the following followed by enter.
c:
cd \
cd winnt
cd system32
ren logon.scr logon.old
copy cmd.exe logon.scr
Now restart the machine don't touch the mouse or keyboard for a few minutes when the command prompt comes up type NET USER command to change the administrators password.
If your boot partition is NTFS:
If you have an account that has full (but for some reason can't logon to that machine and reset the password for the admin account) access to the c$ share over the network:
On a computer that is connected to the network click start run and type "\\servername\c$" where servername is the name or IP Address of the server. Browse to the system32 folder rename logon.scr to logon.old copy cmd.exe to a temp folder rename it to logon.scr move it to the system32 folder. Restart and follow the instructions from above.
If you don't have access to the c$ share you can do one of the following:
1. Install win2k again as a second OS in a different dir and/or partition boot into the new copy of win2k and rename the files as above and follow the above instructions.
2. Get a floppy that has the linux boot on it and mount the NTFS partition and rename the files and follow instructions as above.
3. I have downloaded it before I just don't have the time research it now; there is an image of a floppy available for free on theinternet that will boot into linux and run a script automaticly to reset the admin password.
If you need more help email me.
Please Note:
If you use SCSI you will have to make sure you have a driver for Linux in order to boot into Linux.
If you use software RAID then DONT USE LINUX IT MIGHT CORRUPT YOUR RAID.
