Admin required for special CD access?

By TunaGuy ·
I am running a game (Diablo II, from Blizzard), that REQUIRES Administrator access to run. I have attempted assigning any/all "administrator" policies to a user that does NOT belong to the administration group, but the application continues to complain.

I know the application is attempting to access a special sector on the game CD, which it is unable to access without "administrator" priveliges.

Have any idea how I could run the application without giving access to the administrator ID, or the administrator group?

Thanks,
John Young

Admin required for special CD access?

Hi,
I don't think that your CD have a special sector whitch it is for administrators only.
Maybe the instalation of this game require to run at admin account (try to install after you logon as different user) and also is possible after the instalation that the game can't run because was installed on a different user (I saw applications which run only when, user who installed it, is loged).
You can try to add the user in Power user group and customize the rights.
Maybe you can find more details about install on Windows? at Blizzard site.

I don't have a Win2k box, but maybe you can find something in security policy about time restriction, folder time access restriction/permission or users profiles (these exits in network enviroment with a DC but in standalone mode...!?)

I have seen this before also. There ARE some applications that require the user to be the administrator. They are few and far between but do exist.

The Blizzard site indicates that Administrator priveliges are required on Win2k. I found the special sector on the CD by attempting to copy it, and found all but 1 sector was copied. It must be this sector that it is required to access to run the game.

I am attempting to use some "limiting" software, to prevent the kids from running this (and other) games at all hours of the day. This software puts no limitations upon those signed on as administrator, which is putting me into the Catch 22situation.
