Admin rights.

By Defector ·
Hi,

My son has been given an old laptop by one of his friends. We want to change the hard drive, but before we do, can you tell me if the old administrators rights will still apply to the new HDD?

We do not have the old password for the admin rights, and his friend is now off travelling the globe!

Thanks.

but you are replacing the old hdd with a new one and I would assume that you are putting a nice shiny new OS on it. When you set it up, you will be prompted to create a new password for the admin account.

No.

The old admin p/w is stored on the old drive. As PurpleSkys says, you'll have to install a new operating system on the new drive. Part of the installation process will be setting up a new admin p/w.

One option is to have the old drive copied to the new one. You'll need a hard drive imaging utility to do that (or pay someone to do it).
