    ADMIN SHARE

    Locked

    by rweraf13 ·

I have two machines on my Win NT4 LAN that lose the ADMIN$ share – one is a BDC and the other a workstation. Only two are affected, the other servers and workstations are fine. After manually creating the share on each offending machine, they disappear on reboot. Can I tweak the OS to retain the share or is re-installation absolutely necessary.

You probably have to reinstall the service pack again, especially if it is servicepack 6 you last installed. install SP 6a instead.

Verify that the following key is set as follows. If you change the Value to 0 it will remove/prevent the default shares on re-boot.

(C$, D$, ADMIN$) by setting the following in the Registry:
      Hive HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
      Key CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
      Name AutoShareServer
      Type REG_DWORD
      Value 1

netmorf’s solution worked on the server but not the workstation. However, comparing registry with another workstation revealed discrepancies in \LanmanWorkstation\Parameters so that maybe is the answer. However, netmorf has partially solved the problem and has given me further insight into the mystery of NT registry, so he should have the points anyway.
