Adminstrator password

By journay2 ·
is there a way to reset the password if you've forgotten it without purchasing an outside program?

I don't think you can do it without a 3rd party software. I found this article on MS which isn't very encouraging: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321305&Product=winxp

Good luck!

Nope, nadda, zilch. You have to hack it or remember it

Note: There are free admin account password hacks, some work. some are a pain to get to work.

in any case if you use the 3rd party admin password reset tools it will reset it BUT encrypted data for the account IS LOST and can not be recovered. If you've encrypted files stored in the documents and settings/<administrators account>/my documents they are unrecoverable.

the initial setu-up username is in the administrator group, if you haven't changed privilages, that username can change the admin
username......check your groups for users with admin privilages, make sure that the user in the admin group is not in the regular user or power user groups.

have had some success rebooting in safe mode and
trying changes under the initial username because the initial user sets admin password, but then forgets to give him/her self a password.
That user then has blank password.....(oops).
The first user is put in the admin group by default on the local computer.
