ADS Replication

by Jeremy The IT Guy In reply to ADS Replication

Active Directory Replication. Replication occurs on a schedule, that can be changed by you but I suggest keeping it the way it is. Replication occurs when an update is made to a copy of AD. An update is not only the addition of a piece of data, such as a user or group. It can also be the deletion of a user or group or any other AD object, or by moving an object or modifying an object's properties. AD replication only occurs between 2 DCs at a time. There are two types of updates, an Originating Update (An update that occurs only the first time a change is made to an AD replica) and a Replicated Update (An update that occurs as a result of this change). I hope that this helps you out. There are numerous resources on the microsoft website and if you wanted to get really good with AD, I recommend buying the book Windows 2000 Directory Services. This book is also the certification preparation book for the MCSE 70-217 test. If you need anything else, email me at
