ADSL dropped connections

By USBPort1 ·
I have an out of town user who connects to our Metaframe (MSTS 4.0 SP4, MF 1.8 SP1) server 2 ways: through a leased line router to router and through a new ADSL connection via the internet. We wanted to look at the ADSL option because the leased line was getting too expensive, however, the user gets dropped after 10-15 minutes of inactivity (PC is churning numbers in our Accounting software but user isn't using the mouse or keyboard). I've checked all of the time-out settings and both the user and the ICA connection settings have no time-outs selected. When the user tries to reconnect they get the 1030 Protocol Driver error for 10-20 minutes before the server will let them back on. There are no problems when the user connects via the leased line connection. Checked with the ADSL provider and they say it must be a Metaframe problem. User doesn't lose connection with the internet, just with Metaframe. Could really use some help on this one! Thanks greatly!

I would strongly doubt that the DSL provider is NOT doing some sort of "idle timeout". They possibly do not understand that even though your host is "active" the connections is "idle", as you describe. (The curse of a world full of people who know nothing but PCs!)

I would see about putting a little script that puts some activity on the line and see if the problem goes away. I did a search on Google and at ZDNet using the terms:
"stay alive disconnect alive utility connection" and got lots of hits that might work for this.

I was leaning that direction myself and you confirmed my suspicions - I just wan't sure if they could put a time-out on that type of connection. I'll get the user a stay-alive utility and see what happens. I agree with you that it probably will solve the problem. Thanks for your help!
