ADSL Modem Problems

By schoong ·
I bought a 3COM ADSL dual port modem 3CP4130
and are having difficulties setting it up. According to the instruction, I thought I should have dial-up networking for the ADSL modem too for me to enter the username and password, but I'm not. Can anyone who has setup before, let me know what's wrong.

ADSL Modem Problems

I am using Qwest DSL services, with a Cisco 528, but I will try to help. With DSL, you are establishing a permanent connection. You should be able to manage the 3Com using software that came with it. Think of this device as a computer of it's own. You don't use Dial-up-networking with DSL. The modem is actually a router. Once you configure it with the information your DSL provider should have given you, it will connect to your provider on it's own and should provide DHCP information to your PC. You connect either to the 3Com directly (using a cross-over cable) or using a hub if you are connecting more than one PC. Once you connect your DSL router to your provider and reboot your PC to allow it to be assigned an IP via DHCP, you areconnected and should be able to open your browser and be on the web, like magic.

as a dsl tech myself i will try to help u out the best i can. if you are required to logon w/ a username and password by your dsl isp you are probably setup as pppoe (point to point protocol over ethernet) rather than dhcp- i'm guessing that your modem connects to a network card via a ethernet cable...you will need somesort of pppoe software such as Enternet 300 by Efficient Networks (don't know for sure if it would be compatible tho)give me some more info and i can help u a little better---noprob being a personal dsl tech here

I expect you have an adsl ISP.
With the modem install the drivers and reboot before you install the modem, it should be PnP. Also the TCP/IP should be set to dhcp. You should also make sure you have installed the ISP's software. In the dun the dialto number should be a fake one ie. 7 ones. and yes with ADSL you still need a DUN

My ISP provided me an ALCATEL ADSL modem that plugs into my PC's USB port. The only way I can get it to work is to set DUN (driver CD provided with the modem) and use a fake dialing number - so it is not true that there is no dialup with DSL - it depends on the DSL modem and the drivers.
