ADSL TCP/IP PROBLEM

By bolanle_s_oluwa ·
I recently ordered an ADSL service and I was given 5 IP addresses, one network IP, a default gateway and a subnet mask (that allows only the 5 IPs of course). I have 15 computers on the network, 13 of them are running win98, one is running winnt wksand the last is the winnt pdc. I need to allow all the computers to access the internet through the adsl router using only one IP address. Can anyone help?

The Range of IP Address given to you is 5 only, so you may consider setting one of your PC mainly that has direct Internet Access via the router; you may consider installing WinGate or Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 on this workstation. At such, you will configure all the rest of your 14 PCs' Internet Browsers to access Internet via your proxy gateway. But this solution will not meet your requirements of having all PCs going through the router into Internet but instead through the PC that has Proxy installed.

You can support an unlimited number of workstations on your private network from a single IP address via a router that supports network address translation.

Like you I have ADSL service with a 29 bit mask and have between 5 and 10 hosts (including Exchange and IIS servers) workstations using just one of the 5 usable IP addresses.

You can spend a lot of money on a box to do this for you, but I am currently using David Mischler's excellent IPRoute software (<a href="http://www.mischler.com/iproute">http://www.mischler.com/iproute</a>), which is cheap, does the job and is very secure. All you need is an old PC 386 or better and a pair of network cards.

This should work for you, if you need any assistance configuring it, let me know.

Otherwise you can buy a Linksys DSL router that will do pretty much everything you could need. it will act as a dhcp server, firewall, etc. and there are three models. $100 to $200 depending on which model you pick.

on your gateway:

1- install 2 NIC (one with IP address from ADSL, one private IP address)
2- create DMZ
a.router-gateway(cross over if using Ethernet
b.gateway to local hosts)
2- install proxy (ie. Winproxy, Wingate)on gateway
3- configure all other hosts using Proxy service (ie. configure gateway private IP address in IE) checkout www.winproxy.com

benefits:
1- log of web activities,
2- secure LAN,
3- easier to manage
