Advantage & Disadvantage: Print Services

By dshuang5858 ·
I know there are two ways of setup network printing:
1. print directly to print server device, such as HP JetDirect
2. setup print service on w2k server.

Any advantage and disadvantage on both way?

It's not a question of advantage or disatvantage.

It depends on how many computers use the printers.
- u can use the print directly if u do not have many computers and not many printjobs, and be sure that if the printer is working a job, the others users receive an error message until the printer is released from the job (TCP/IP don't cache the printer jobs) and gets the next job.
- using a print server lets u manage the printers jobs, setting priorities etc., allow u to use any monitoring programs etc.

An advantage to using HP JetDirect is that if your print server has a problem and you are not there to fix it right away your users can still print (or if the problem takes a while to fix). Check your memory in the printer to help allow mor than one user to print at a time. Some printers have hardware spooling for use with Jet Direct.

Print server advantage includes better management of the printers and better security for the printers (that way you don't have "tecnically savvy" people installing printers they shouldn't be able to print to in the first place)
