Advice on adding tape drive to Win98 pc

By swomack ·
I have a PII-233 Gateway computer that I would like to use as a backup pc for a small office. It is your basic desktop pc with Win98. What would be the best type of tape drive at the best price (around $1000)? DAT, AIT, Travan? SCSI or ATAPI? Also, if I get a SCSI drive do I have to add a SCSI card to the computer if it doesn't have one?

Advice on adding tape drive to Win98 pc

As always it depends on your needs.

As for SCSI versus ATAPI(IDE), your older computer wouldn't have the latest IDE hardware, so SCSI would be faster, if and only if, you are backing up off a SCSI HD. Don't forget you are only as fast as your slowest link, and if you are backing up an IDE device to a SCSI device, you are only as fast as the IDE. Yes you do need a SCSI card, but those have come down alot in price. Given the speed of your computer, don't invest in the best SCSI card you can buy because your CPU/Bus speed will be a bottleneck.

My usage has been mostly DAT, as the media is relatively inexpensive and its fairly reliable. I have used TRAVAN, but the media is pricey.

A lot will depend on how much data you need to back up. Big data centres use DLT, Super DLT and LTO, but these are probably outside your budget.

I assume you are going to share space on the computers HD to your network users and have that shared space backup automatically after hours.

Make sure you have a good fast network card, as people will be dumping large files over the network.

Hope that helps.

James
