If you asked for advice on your needs

Return this NB to who you brought it from and ask for either a exchange for one loaded with XP or a refund. You are entitled to this but only if you asked for advice on your needs. If you walked in and brought one off the shelf without asking about it that's your fault.

Now for XP you can contact HP who own Compaq and get a set of Recovery Disc's that have XP on them and load the unit with XP but because you have brought a copy of Vista you should need to buy a full License of XP unless you have the Enterprise version of Vista Loaded which has a backward compatible License. So unless you have the Enterprise Version of Vista you can expect to pay the Full Price for the XP Recovery Disc's and they should come with a COA that has your Product Key printed on it.

Because M$ effectively fines OEM Makers you'll pay more for a copy of XP Pro that you will for Vista Ultimate, that's just the way that M$ is attempting to get people to buy Vista.
