Age and Salary

By vxdell ·
I am a 40 year old male making a career change. Soon I will be graduating from Comm. College with an Associate in Networking. I have gained my A+, CCNA, MCSE and CNA. I have no practical Networking experience but I do have 14 yrs. experience in Electronics. I fear that my age and lack of experience may hinder my job search and compensation. Does anyone know what the market is like for a "Mature Rookie" and what the starting salaries are for the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area.

Age and Salary

Hi, your electronics skills would really differentiate you from many cert. holders. So often components are treated as field replacable units when a quick fix is all that needed (ex, a guy in our bldg. was tossing an hp printer and I took it thinking I could at least use it for parts; turns out it only the actuator adjusted and once I did that it works like a charm). You do need experience though; you could look for a position as a net admin. associate in a small/med. business. Age I don't see as a concern. You have many years ahead as an IT pro. Check the big sites for salary info. and advice: www.brainbuzz.com; zdnet (search under salaries); guru.com;techies.com. I wish you the best of luck.

Your college along with your Certifications will deffinetly get you a job. With no experience you may not start as the top dog, but you can work your way up fast. We hire a real rookie fresh out of college with just some PC experience, his task has expanded and he is now the top dog and doing well.

Age has nothing to do with it as long as you are confident that you know what you are doing. There are a lot of salary calculators on the web but I don't trust them. Everytime I use one (for Kicks) it tells me that I can take a salary cut to make a move.

I was facing a similar problem a year ago. I turning 30.I was a grade school teacher and I went back to a technical college and got a A.S. in computer networking. Got my A+,and CNA. Trust me your eletronicbackground will help a lot and you'll catch up really fast. Plus the other certs you have will show you can understand how differnt systems work. You'll have a Job in no time making mid $50s. Just remeber age is not a factor if your willing to learn and grow. Good Luck!

Age may not be a factor in your job search.Yet I keep up on articles written on IT shortage and the real world is that without practical expierence you will be in a pool like a lot of us that have gotten certifications and no job expierence, depending on the region and the demand in your area will be a big factor in whether you will find immediate employment.A lot of companies are hestitant to hire someone with no job expierence and a high salary demand, just be flexible and good luck.

I went back to school at age 50 after being forced to change careers because of a truck driving accident. Did not have a problem gaing employment as a Customer Support Rep for a major hospital in my area. You should do real well with all of your certifications. I live in the West so I can not comment on salaries in the Baltimore/Washingtom D.C. area. Hope this helps
