AGP vs PCI

By nowrich ·
What is the difference between AGP and PCI? Also, why does it seem that so many graphic card developers are using PCI instead of AGP? New at this.

Check out:

Although this may change with the PCIX bus.

Thanks Norm

AGP stands for Accellerated Graphics Port
PCI stands for Periphial Control Interface

When AGP first came out, it had a 10% speed improvement as compared to a similar PCI card.

With the current 4X, and comming 8X AGP ports, that speed improvement is even greater.

In addition, an AGP graphics card can augment the on-card memory, and use some of the system RAM to increase graphics performance.

I myself am seeing fewer and fewer PCI graphic card options, as most systems have AGP ports.

If your local store has a lot of PCI cards, they are likely catering to the upgrade market for systems with "on-board" AGP graphics.
Since these are usually low cost systems, the video system is often very limited, and the only option is to install a PCI graphics card.

AGP -> Fast and New. 90% of cards are made to this STANDARD

PCI -> Old, but still comparable. Being phased out as graphics STANDARD

If you are using system for high resolution works AGP card is preferable.

PCI card is inserted on PCI(White) slot of the motherboard

when AGP card is inserted in AGP (Brown)slot
