AIC78xx is an Adaptec SCSI controller. If you are using a SCSI tape drive, there may be a problem with your bus (i.e. improper termination, over-extended cable length, etc.). If you don't have a SCSI controller, then it's easy. Disable the AIC78xx driver and try again.

This error means the device did not respond within the timeout period. I have resolved this before by updating to the latest driver from adaptec. Also, as mentioned already, be sure that your SCSI cabling and termination is correct.

If none of the above is the problem, you may have a problem with the tape drive itself.

From experience this is the question I put to you.

Is there a SCSI CD-ROM connected to the same cable?

I have run across other devices connected to the same cable as the tape drive to cause buss resets that eventually cause tape drive timeouts. CD-ROMS seem to be the worst culprits. If your response to my above question is true then disconnect the CD-ROM and try again. If not and other devices are attached then disconnect them one at a time to see if it fixes the problem. Otherwise it maybe a driver issue.

I see this a lot with Seagate Backup Exec. (Veritas now). Reinstall the Driver and you should be good to go. If you haven't already make sure and check the connections etc.
