ALL on board USB ports stopped working

By cummingseric79 ·
I got a desktop with XP SP3 and all of my on board USB ports as well as the port in the front of the machine does not work. I first noticed it when the usb mouse stopped working. I tried plugging my mp3 player in, it seems to charge but not recognized in windows. I checked the device manager for the usb controllers and they look fine. USB is enabled in BIOS. Any suggestions?

what version? ah??

About the only thing I could think of is, if your USB ports are 1.1 and the devices are 2.0 and don't have 1.1 backward compatibility, the USB 2.0 device then won't be recognized by PnP and won't work. Alternative is to buy a USB 2.0 PCI card.

Open the Device Manger

And delete the existing USB Ports/Hubs.

Restart the system and allow Windows to install the USB Drivers and then see if they work now.

This could be a bit difficult if you must use a USB Mouse as the moment that you delete all of the USB Ports your mouse will stop working. So you'll need to use either a PS2 Mouse if you can or Keyboard Shortcuts to restart the unit.

If that doesn't work you'll need to open the case and inspect for signs of damage. Big Black Burn Marks are defiantly not a good sign here.
