All PC''s should be the same!!!damn it

By debtech ·
Would somebody please tell all the Pc makers out there to get together and try to make them all work the same! And why do we have to keep buying third party books and magazines with so called tips and tricks to make them work??? If there is anythingthe Government should get after Bill Gates about its this> make your windows operating system come with the apropriate information to make it work.Hey we don't buy a car from Ford zand then have to go to chevy to get info on how to operate it!! Come on wake up out there. Now my problem is this.
somebody setn this compaq into real mode. She has a gui but is doing a msdos mode. Is this a virus?? she has lost her sound and won't recognize the CDROMm and won't load a driver for the CDROM. Theyt don't have the installation disks or I'd wipe her clean and start over but thats impossiable when she won't load the drivers for the CDROM. I think we should just trash it don't you ?
I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense but my brain is fried and I'm tired of shooting in the dark over this one

Hi

Usually the reasons for CD-ROM not to work:
1- A virus.
2- Noide subkey in registry with a value of 1.
3- Motherboard driver are not installed or over written.
4- Problem with CD-ROM connection data and power cables or jumber setting of the CD-ROM or the master hard disk.
5- BAD CD-ROM.

checking:
1-Go to The Performance tab in system properties and check if your computer is using MS-DOS Compatibility mode.
2- -Go to device manager and check if your CD-ROM or the IDE
controler has a yellow "?".
3- You need a 3.5" floppy to create a bootable disk.and a antivirus software.
4- start->setting->control panel->add/remove programs->(TAB) stratup disk->create disk.
solution:
1- Check the hardware cabels, jumber setting...ectand a firm that red side of cable in pin one.
2-Reboot and check for a virus.
3-reboot and use the boot disk you created to check for DOS access of the CD-ROM.
4-Go to compaq site and download needed drivers.
5- check your registry for noide subkey and delete it.

read the MS article for more info.

WINTEL, aka Grove & Gates, would love to give you what you ask for -- although you might be sorry once you got it. The U.S. Supreme Court (yeah -- the same folks that didn't like IBM, AT&T, Al Gore ), which has history of never being consistant (unless you count paying attention to special interests), has decided that for now, it ain't gonna happen. [ Nothing like a bunch of former lawyers determing the course of technology, nad everything else!!! ] So, barring a very sudden surge in the economy, we won't be having a $100,000,000,000-aire for a while. I hope no one's ego suffers.

As far as the machine, unplug it and have someone watch it until the ghosts leave and then try again.

Nooooooooooooooooo! Then I'd be forced to buy new software and equipment for the software every 2 years!!!! Oh No The new agreement with MS says I have to! Nooooooooooooooooooo!

Wake me, please!

Back to business....

Backup what you can and then see if you can boot from floppy with a windows startup disk and see if the cdrom drive is there or not.... If you can see it - fdisk and reformat and start over with a clean install.

seems like you have little choice but to ask compaq nicely if they would send you the cd rom, which i dont think is going to happen realy, in that case id probaly bin it.. its not like computers are expensive anymore, especialy in the us (there 25% more expensive here!) go on treat yourself!
about makeing all computers the same, like that guy just said, compaq have there own start up... if they werent atempting to make a standard of there own then you wouldnt need a cd rom realy, you could get stuff else where! but if they were all the same every time you wanted an upgrade youd have to fork out for a new computer! (and so would everyone else!) thats why i have a playstation2 for games not a pc.
why not get a mac? much more relyable than pcs! (but too expensive over here for me)
